Auditory Processing Disorder
Hearing is what our ears do - they take sound waves and convert them to electrical impulses that are sent to our brain to be processed.
Auditory processing is the brain’s processing of the information that it receives from the ears. This is a complicated business involving multiple pathways. Good solid pathways are required for easy comprehension and understanding. When a person has difficulty with auditory processing, they are said to have an auditory processing disorder.
Auditory processing disorders affect people’s lives in many different ways. Some may struggle to follow the conversation when at a cafe with friends, which can leave them feeling isolated. Others may be able to hear people speaking but have difficulty working out what’s being said. A child may have trouble understanding their teacher in the classroom and/or be struggling with their schoolwork. Remembering spoken instructions may also be challenging.
When the auditory pathways are not working at their best, listening requires more effort, leaving a person tired by the end of the day.
Auditory processing disorders can affect people with normal hearing, as well as those who have a hearing loss. They may also be present in children (and adults) who have experienced extended periods of poor ear health.
An auditory processing evaluation identifies any weaknesses in the auditory system and assesses the effect they are having on a person’s life.
Auditory therapy targets the problems areas, strengthening the auditory pathways, and thereby reducing the listening effort required for auditory information to be processed.
